The Block Law Office, LLC is a small but capable law firm in Anchorage, Alaska supporting the practice of Matt Block. That practice centers on helping early stage and new ventures (whether brand new or spinoffs from existing enterprises) recognize and mitigate the unique risks that they face. Matt helps clients develop business plans and models, recognize and develop protection strategies for their intellectual property, make organizational decisions, and draft and develop working contracts.

In addition, Matt helps organizations, whether big or small, identify their data and document collection, retention, and destruction obligations, and develop procedures and policies for meeting and exceeding them.

Matt is a frequent speaker and presenter in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. He is Co-Chair of the Alaska Bar Association Business Section. He is also the proud father of three beautiful children.

Matt started his practice at a large, fast-growing national law firm doing a mix of business and litigation. He represented large oil and gas companies, Alaska Native Corporations, small companies and startups, and even an individual in traffic court (we won!). For a short time in 2008, he worked for his family business trying to mitigate the harm of the real estate bust. When he returned to practice, he worked for a mid-size regional law firm, again representing companies small and large in a mix of issues. But his first love had been working with startups, whose financial needs were incompatible with the regional law firm business model, so in 2013 he left to start the Alaska Business Hatchery (an Alaskan incubator).

The Hatchery, unfortunately, flopped: it was ahead of its time, and Launch Alaska! was started by some brilliant and energetic folks a few years later to fanfare and much greater success. But several of Matt's clients from his law firm days, as well as some new ones, still needed help and Matt continued to assist them while trying to get the Hatchery off the ground. That was the start of the Block Law Office.

Matt served as GC, and eventually Vice-President of Legal Affairs, for Ahtna, Inc., the Alaska Native Regional Corporation for the Copper River basin, and served in that capacity for over 3 years. In that capacity, he was responsible (either directly or by overseeing a very small staff) for all of the legal affairs of the company, including its litigation, regulatory compliance, corporate compliance, M&A, IP, and substantial government contracting business.
